4th and 5th Class have now moved up to 5th and 6th, but are reaping the rewards of their hard work in the garden during the last school year.
Before the summer holidays, they harvested their first crop of potatoes. They had sown two varieties: Colleen and Home Guard. Mr McCullagh cooked the potatoes in a steamer and they were able to enjoy them in class. The carrots and turnips were not quite ready at this stage.
During the summer, the Sweet Pea continued to bloom. Mr McCullagh gathered a huge bunch of them and delivered them next door to the Community Nursing Unit in St Joseph’s Hospital, where they were gratefully received.
In the first few days of the new school year, the students returned to the garden to harvest turnips and carrots, and were able to take some home for dinner. They were very tasty! Thank you to 5th and 6th Class for all the hard work you put into the garden last year.
