Following the success of the 5th Class ‘Cycle Right Programme’, many 5th class pupils have taken to cycling in their free time.
The following is an account from one 5th Class pupil of how cycling has become one of his favourite pastimes:
A few years ago when I was younger I used to go to St Anne’s on my bike to the ‘Chuckies’. One day when I was there, my dad showed me a few videos of mountain biking. A few months later I got a new, bigger bike which had suspension. I had that bike for two years until a few months ago when I got another new bike. Then we started going to the Wicklow Gap to mountain bike.
I enjoy going to the Gap, also known as Glencullen Adventure Park, with my dad. When you arrive there you park your car. Then you go over to the reception and get a tag. While you are waiting you can go up and down the skills track as much as you like. At 9:00 am, a van arrives to bring you to the top of the mountain. When you get there you can pick whichever trail you want to cycle. There are different levels of difficulty. I enjoy the red trails the best because they challenge me a little bit but they are still easy for me. The black trails are harder and some of them are pro-level. The blue trails are easy and calm.
I enjoy mountain biking because it gives me a challenge but it is also fun. It’s nice to get out in the fresh air and also spend time with my dad.
